Buildings
The winter lambing flock is housed in greenhouse / coverall structures. These greenhouses / coveralls provide a bright and healthy environment for the sheep during the winter months. Dry ewes are fed hay outside in the winter. During the summer months, the buildings are closed up and the heat is an excellent sterilizer of pathogens. The (Steele’s) renovated bank barn is a 700 lamb capacity, slated floor, feeder barn. Animals are housed on the upper floor with 8' side curtains running the entire east and west side. Lambs are penned in groups of 65 and sorted by weight and sex. Feeding is a fully automated, whole grain ration. The basement below serves as a dry manure storage area with cross-pit ventilation. Sheep handling barns are designed with the capacity to process several hundred animals per hour. Handling barns also include shearing facilities. New genetics are introduced via the the surgery room located at the Steele’s farm.
