...get
more lambs to market with OLIBS replacement ewes! |
|
|
|
| There
are several advantages to becoming an OLIBS Commercial Producer including: |
|
- Uniform
replacement ewes from Replicator's Association
- Ongoing
genetic advancement through sire referencing within the association
- Participation
by commercial producers in SFIP will further enhance rate of improvement
- Replacement
ewe lambs born throughout the year to match any breeding program (once
a year, 3 in 2 or 5 star accelerated)
- Allows
commercial producers to concentrate on providing uniform, quality
lambs for the meat market
- High
index, terminal sire rams, can be purchased and utilized for their
full productive life without risk of inbreeding
- High
health ewes relate to lower flock depreciation costs
- Ewes
should wean more pounds of lamb per ewe and more lambs per ewe
- Opportunities
to participate in future Quality Assurance schemes for improved public
perception
|
|
|
|
| Becoming
an OLIBS Commercial Producer can be a profitable venture; however, guidelines
should be followed including: |
|
-
Purchase OLIBS ewes (may choose to own only OLIBS stock or mix with
existing flock)
- Buy
replacements from Replicating Breeders Association
- Use
terminal sires of own choice (preferably health matched to OLIBS ewes)
- Produce
uniform, quality meat lambs for market
- Can
not sell any breeding stock using the OLIBS name in any form ie. OLIBS
crossbred ewes
|
|
|
|
| Recommendations
for OLIBS Commercial Producers: |
|
- For
maximum health benefits John and Eadie recommend that Commercial Producers
de-populate their current flock, disinfect premises and re-populate
with OLIBS replacement ewes
- SFIP
recording (50 and 100 day weights) so that these animals can be tracked
for research purposes
- Sheep
Flock Health Program
- At
least level one biosecurity
- High
health maintenance of flock is optional
